Central University of Tamil Nadu offers both 5-year Integrated Programmes and 2-year Post Graduate Programmes in various schools.
Five-Year Integrated M. Sc. Programmes in Sciences
After successful completion of the academic requirements students are awarded a Master of Science degree in one of the three subjects: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. The 5-year Integrated M. Sc. Programme is spread into ten semesters where the first six semesters are designed for broad understanding of the subject. Later, two years will have increased focus on subject. The final semester is devoted exclusively to a research project.
Semesters 1, 2, 3 and 4: The curriculum for the first four semesters is common to all students and systematic exposure to mathematics, physics and chemistry will be given with English and Social studies subjects.
Semesters 5, 6, 7 and 8: The specialization begins from the fifth semester. The core courses in the subject of specialization provide strong foundations in both theoretical and experimental aspects of the discipline. Even after specialization in third year, students are required to go through a certain number of courses in other disciplines.
Semesters 9 and 10: A research project will be started in the ninth semester along with advanced elective courses. The final semester will be devoted exclusively to the project. The outcome of the investigation will be reported in the form of a thesis. Throughout the five-year programme, students will be encouraged to take up summer projects and visit reputed national laboratories and Universities. Eminent scientists from India and abroad will be regularly invited to give colloquia/seminars and interact with the students. In short, the curricula are designed to ensure depth in the area of specialization together with breadth of exposure and intellectual enrichment, and to prepare the students for high level professional research and development career in national laboratories, Universities and other institutions.
Five-Year Integrated M. Sc. Programme In Economics
Madras School of Economics (MSE) has collaborated with the Central University of Tamil Nadu in developing and teaching a 5-year integrated M. Sc. Programme in economics. As per the MOU signed between MSE and CUTN, the course will be offered by CUTN in the first three years and then will be undertaken by MSE in the remaining two years. The Economics papers will be offered in the first three years preparing the student to easily fit into the 2-year post-graduate programmes. These courses will be designed to provide the student with an understanding of the theoretical principles of economics while developing awareness of development issues and regional perspectives for policy applications. Besides economics, the course will provide a sound grounding in languages, liberal arts, sciences, and social sciences. |
