INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE

Its primary areas of tutelage being journalism and mass communication, the Department of Media and Communication has drawn from the best of industry with academic indulgence to pump itself with some professional nourishment. Launched in 2013, this department is now being forged ahead with five permanent faculty members—Associate Professor and Head of the Department Dr. Mahendra Kumar Padhy; Assistant Professor Dr. Francis P. Barclay; Assistant Professor Dr. Nikhil K. Gouda; Assistant Professor Dr. R. Shamala; and Assistant Professor Dr. Boobalakrishnan—who are also industry experts in their own rights. This apart the Department has a contractual faculty member Dr. Deivasree Anbu.

PRODUCING PROFESSIONALS

This department offers a two-year Master’s course in Mass Communication (M.A., Mass Com), with the core areas being journalism, film studies, television, radio, short film, documentary, community media and new media, apart from communication research. It also offers Ph.D in Journalism and Mass Communication. Looking beyond just scholarly gain and aiming at producing media professionals, this department relies heavily on practical training and regular internships, apart from applicable theoretical knowledge. We are also provided with world-class infrastructure and professional training equipment to match contemporary media needs.

WIDE EXPOSURE

We have an exclusive-dedicated media lab and auditorium space for screening movies and studio-recording. We bring out a students’ magazine—Opus. Apart from regular training, we also bring industry experts to the department to widen the exposure of media students. An in-house community radio is also in the pipeline. With the rising popularity of media and media-related courses across the nation and top-notch facilities, we are drawing a mixed crowd of students from different states and diverse backgrounds. With high-class professional expertise and research-intensive faculty members, the department also aims to redefine education in the age of the internet.

Admission to M. A. and Research programmes

M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes are offered in Mass Communication. Candidates with fellowships can apply by mailing their interest to hodmedia@cutn.ac.in. Candidates without fellowship need to take up the CUCET. To join the M.A. in Mass Communication programme, the candidates have to attend the all-India CUCET entrance examination, which stands for Central Universities Common Entrance Test. Every year, CUCET is conducted by a consortium of Central universities. CUCET is conducted at over 50 centres across the country for admission to various under-graduate, post-graduate and research programmes.

'Online Verification and Fact Checking’ workshop with Google News Initiative

The Department of Media and Communication, Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN), hosted a two-day workshop on ‘Online Verification and Fact Checking’ in collaboration with Google News Initiative on 6th and 7th February 2020. More than 100 participants, including students and faculty members took part in the workshop.

The inaugural ceremony was graced with the presence of Chief Guest Dr. Prateep V Philip IPS DGP, along with Prof. A P Dash, Vice-Chancellor CUTN, Prof. S Ravi, Dean, School of Communication, CMA V Palani, Finance Officer, CUTN. Dr.Manash Pratim Goswami, Head of the Department, delivered the opening note.

Prof. A P Dash in his address, emphasized on the significance of fact checking and online verification in today’s scenario. Dr. Prateep V Philip IPS DGP, CS,delivered the inaugural address, encouraging all young media students to pledge an unflinching commitment to truth. Syed Muhammed A, Vice President, Microland, delivered a thoughtful lecture on‘Cyber security: Threats, Challenges and Preventive measures. Finally, Mr. Mahindra Prabu M, Assistant Professor of Law, Tamil Nadu National Law University, spoke about ‘Cyber Law: Legal Measures and Enforcement’.

On the second day, participants were given hands-on experience on tools and techniques for Fact-checking and Online Verification by Google certified trainer Mr. Iyan Karthikeyan. Certificates for the participants were distributed by the VC during the valedictory function.


A BALANCED CURRICULUM

In the context of changing paradigms of academic landscapes media education has received much theoretical and practical importance. It is no wonder then a career in Mass Communication and Media is one of the most sought after careers in today’s time. The postgraduate programme of the Department of Media and Communication is designed to equip the students with knowledge in handling the latest technological advancements in media, with a balanced curriculum that challenges students to confront contemporary issues in media theory, research, policy, planning, production and management. Here an optimum balance is maintained between theory and practice. Substantial man hours are spent on laying a strong foundation of different kinds of media, like print, electronic and new media along with exposure to the latest and advanced media technologies. The new trends and developments in media are taught in order to equip the students to be eligible for specialist jobs at various media houses. The basic idea is to develop a critical insight into political, social, economic and cultural dimensions of contemporary issues and to impart training in Media and Communication, keeping in mind the larger perspective and social commitment of the profession. The course contents are comprehensive and are in tune with the latest industry standards. The programmes of the school intend to completely cover up for the rigours of the industry with intense training modules being a part of the course. The school currently offers a Two-Year post graduate programme, M. A. in Media and communication covers subjects like Media and Cultural studies, Communication Theories and Processes, Print Media: Theory and Practice,Radio:Theory and Practice, Communication and Social Change, Video and Television:Theory and Practice, New Media: Theory and Practice, Media Laws and Ethics, Understanding Cinema, Communication Research: Tools and Techniques, Community Media, Media Structures and Audiences, Documentary film: Theory and Practice, etc. The students are appraised based on their involvement and participation in tutorials, lecture classes and practical studies. They are also assessed by the project work and seminars apart from the examinations conducted by the University.

Media Studio and Media Theater:





Well equipped state of the art Media studio is established in the department of Media and Communication to train the students in media productions and to cater the technological needs of education in this digital age. Students of the department are provided with real-world industry training with the latest technology and equipment of industry standards.





Media theater in the department of media and communication has a capacity of 120 seats. Media theater facilitates the students by screening them classical films produced across the world followed by a discussion, which helps to provide insights for doing film studies research. The films produced by the students are also screened and the media theater is used for the post production dubbing and preview.

Facilities for e-content development



Media studio in the media and communication department is a one of the state of the art media production and resource center in the country. Media studio facilitates to produce high quality e-learning contents across diverse platforms accessible to all stakeholders in higher education. Collaborates with various stakeholders involved in the production of e-content materials to cater the needs of higher education. Studio is a repository of high quality e-learning resources.
