The Department of Microbiology, established in 2017 at the Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN), Thiruvarur, offers a two-year full-time MSc Degree Program in Microbiology. The department offers MSc programme that encompasses various areas of modern microbiology such as General Microbiology, Cellular & Molecular Microbiology, Microbial Biochemistry, Immunobiology, Microbial Genetics, Microbial Physiology, Bacteriology, Mycology, Virology, Parasitology, Food, Dairy, Pharmaceutical and Industrial Microbiology, Agricultural Microbiology, Plant Pathology, Methods in Gene Technology, Biosafety, Bioethics and IPR, Computational Biology, Biostatistics, Marine Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology, Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Medical Microbiology and Microbial Technology. These areas are among the most rapidly developing fields of microbiological research and will offer highly qualified manpower to industry and academia in the country. The department aims to place students in good positions in the marketplace following graduation. In summary, the overall aim of the Department of Microbiology is to produce students whose skills, scientific appreciation, and critical faculties are sufficiently developed to enable them to embark on independent research.
The vision of the Department is to disseminate knowledge across the theoretical and practical aspects of applied microbiology that is imperative for the development of scientific research in the country. The mission of the Department of Microbiology is to impart knowledge and training across the different fields of microbiology to be able to equip students for academics/industry. The programmes have been designed to enhance awareness of current research across various fields of microbiology and to bring student’s knowledge to the latest state-of-the-art in their area of interest. The department has all the facilities needed to conduct basic research across the diverse areas of specialization of its faculty members.

M.Sc. Microbiology is offered as a 72-credit-hour degree programme that encompasses 60 credits of Core Courses (CC) and 12 credits of Elective Courses (EC). The programme has 4 semesters, and each semester will have courses equivalent of 20 credits. The end-semester (semester IV) has 6 credits of compulsory project work and dissertation that is aimed at imparting research training to the students.
