One-day Awareness Programme on Drug Abuse Prevention for School Students, Teachers and Parents


One-day Awareness Programme on Drug Abuse Prevention for School Students, Teachers and Parents was conducted at Govt. Higher Secondary School, Peralam, Thiruvarur by the Department of social work, Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN) on 31 st January 2020. This programme was conducted in collaboration with the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), New Delhi and Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.
The Technical support was provided by District Child Protection Unit, Thiruvarur, Government of Tamil Nadu. Nearly 200 students from XI and XII classes participated in the awareness programme. Prof. Sigamani. P, Head, Department of Social Work, Central University of Tamil Nadu explained about the ill effects of drugs and alcohol. He motivated the students to spread the awareness message to their friends, peers and family members. Shri. C. Jeevaanandham, Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, Thiruvarur stressed students to associate with good friends and seek helpline for assistance. Mr. P. Selvaraju, District Child Protection Officer, Thiruvarur, Government of Tamil Nadu explained students about preventive measures, Government interventions and legislative provisions. He conducted students’ interactive session where students shared their views on the danger of drug abuse. Ms.Savitha, Counsellor, DCPU addressed on the rehabilitation and treatment for drug-affected and addicted. Ms K. Saraswathi, Block Educational Officer, Thiruvarur encouraged students to get help from their parents and teachers when they face difficult life situations as adults tend to provide better life advice than their peers. Mr M. Ravi, the Headmaster, appreciated the efforts of the Department of Social Work, CUTN for conducting the awareness programme. DCPU Staffs, Schools Teachers, Parents, the Department of Social Work Assistant Professors Mr. A. Prabhu and Dr. K. Umadevi, Research Scholars Mr. Saket and Mr. Vighneswaran and MSW Students participated in the Awareness Programme. As the students gave a good response to the awareness programme the Department of Social Work has proposed to conduct 10 more Drug Abuse Awareness Programmes at various Government Higher Secondary Schools of Thiruvarur.
