Prof.R.Karpaga Kumaravel

  • Prof.Karpaga Kumaravel is an Awardee of Senior Fulbright Fellowship as well as Commonwealth Fellowship and has served as the Vice-Chancellor of Madurai-Kamaraj University (University with Potential for Excellence) and also in various capacities in his more than three decades of Service ( As Professor and Head of the Departments of Educational Technology and Education for 18 years, Also as Syndicate Member, Dean, Director-UGC-HRDC and Co-Ordinator for UGC-SAP-DRS-I&II). He completed International Consultancy Assignments for UNESCO, CoL, Canada and Department for International Development (DFID)-London and British Council. Travelled widely across the world, he has visited world-renowned Universities on academic assignments in Twenty-Nine Countries of all the Continents viz., Europe, USA, Australia, Africa and Asia, which include among others Washington University, Philadelphia University, USA, Oxford University, Cambridge University, UK, UNESCO-Paris, UNESCO-APEID, International Institute of Education Planning, St. Peters University, Russia, Athens University, Greece, Konkuk University, Seoul, South Korea, University of Melbourne, Australia and Nagoya University, Japan . He has successfully completed three International Projects. Under his leadership, the Department of Educational Technology, Bharathidasan University has emerged as the first Department in Educational Technology in South India to get the Department for Research Studies (DRS) status with a Special Assistance from the UGC for which he was the Project Coordinator for DRS-I as well as DRS-II (Rs.90 Lakhs). He has trained thousands of Higher Education Teachers through as many as 72 Orientation and Refresher Courses/Workshops/Seminars and Conferences. He has contributed to National Apex Bodies like UGC, NAAC, NCTE and NCERT in various key responsibilities such as Chairman of the UGC Committee for the Assessment of the autonomous colleges, UGC Committees for the Evaluation of the achievements of the universities and assessment of the requirements of the Universities in the States of Punjab and Chattisgarh.

  • • He has conceived, experimented and successfully implemented pioneer projects like Assessment and Accreditation of Schools, the first of its kind in the country through School Assessment and Accreditation Council (SAAC), established by him under Bharathidasan University School Linkage Cell (BSLC). He has conceived, developed and successfully implemented many innovative academic programmes like M.Sc. Media & Communication, a five-year integrated programme, PG Diploma in e-Learning, PG Diploma in Educational Administration and PG Diploma in Higher Education Technology.He has contributed as an Expert for NCERT in the formulation of National Curriculum Framework and for MHRD in the development of National Policy on ICT in School Education for the XII Plan Period.
  • • He established the Centre for Educational Research with financial support from UGC and Government of Tamil Nadu, the first of its kind in South India. He was the Founder cum Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Educational Research, Development and Extension, ISSN Number 0974-889X, also served as Editor for the Journal of Educational Research and Extension (for 5 years), Reviewer for the NCERT’s Indian Journal of Education, International Editorial Board Member for the International Journal of Web-Based Communities and Jury for the selection of Research Papers in the International Conference on “Networking Communities” at Portuguese.
