The Department of Economics is one of the old departments in the School of Social Sciences and Humanities started in the year 2011 at Central University of Tamil Nadu. Initially, the department started with one programme that is Integrated M.Sc. Economics with 16 students in the year 2011. Currently, it offers PhD Programme in Economics, Five-Year Integrated M. A. Programme in Economics and Two-Year M. A. Programme in Economics and hosts around 200 students and scholars together. The programmes have been widely popularised and applications received for each programme for admission have been increased by manifolds.

The Course curriculum for the all programmes have been developed by the Board of studies, Economics consisting of distinguished experts from academics and industry. The course is designed meticulously to address the need of both theoretical and applied aspects of Economic studies and diversified career objectives including Research. The implementation of choice-based credit system facilitates students to pursue their interests and to select their specialization from an unmatched variety of courses and subject-specific electives. The courses in Statistics, Mathematics, Econometrics, Mathematical Economics and data analysis equip them with a good range of skills and tools for quantitative analysis. All these courses are application oriented and very relevant for today’s liberalized economic environment and Job market requirements.

Vision: To be a prominent research and teaching department in Economics with the objective of preparing our students to be leaders capable of meeting the challenges of the developing local and global community.

Thrust areas of the Department: Agricultural Economics, Development Economics, Monetary and Financial Economics, Econometrics and Quantitative Economics, Indian Economic issues, Macroeconomic Policy analysis, Public Finance and Policy, Industrial Economics, Health Economics.

Multiple flexibility options for five-year-Integrated MA Economics. i.e., Exit option after completing the third year with a B.A. degree
    or completing the programme at CUTN.
International standard curriculum with more subjects specific and skill based elective courses. Course content is so designed to
     address the need of the Job market, placement and advanced studies and Research
Well experienced faculty with specialization in key areas of Economics
Good Infrastructure facility with Own Computing Lab

Currently the Department offers following programmes:

Ph.D. Programme in Economics
Full Time Research programme offered in regular mode. Admission to Ph.D programme will be through the Entrance test conducted by the CUTN or CUCET against each specific notification for admission. However, valid UGC JRF/ Fellowship holders may apply to the Department at any time for consideration of admission.


Eligibility#: A consistently good academic record possessing a Master’s Degree (two years duration) in Economics with a minimum of 55% marks [50% for OBC (Non-creamy layer) /SC/ST/PWD candidates] overall marks, preceded by a Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent Degree of three years duration from a recognized University/Institute.


Two-Year M. A. Programme in Economics
The PG Degree programme is a two-year programme, divided into four semesters. In the first semester, core courses are offered which lay the foundations for the basic theory and give students a feel for how it is being played out in real economics. From the second semester onwards, students choose elective papers from wide range of electives offered by the department to acquire specialisations, besides some core papers.


Eligibility#: Any Bachelor’s Degree of a recognized University with a minimum of 55% marks for General Category,50% marks for OBC (Non-creamy Layer), 45% marks for SC/ST/PWD Candidates and who had studied Economics / Mathematics / Statistics at UG level.


Five-Year Integrated M. A. Programme in Economics
The Central University of Tamil Nadu offers the five-year Integrated M. A. Economics, divided into ten semesters. CUTN had collabration with Madras School of Economics for this programme till the academic year 2020-21.


Eligibility#: A Pass in the Plus two examination or equivalent of any recognized board in India with Economics /Mathematics/ Statistics as one of the subject at the Hr. Secondary level with 60% marks in aggregate for General Category, 55% marks for OBC (Non-creamy layer) and 50% marks for SC/ST/PWD candidates.
