The Department of Microbiology is now a DST-FIST Awardee with the Grant Amount of Rs. 150 lakhs. The research proposal from the Department of Microbiology was favorably recommended for the receipt of DST-FIST Grant in Level B category by Department of Science and Technology FIST Advisory Board. The award was granted for the project on 19-12-2022 for a period of five years during which the grant will support the cost of equipment, consumables, computational and networking facility, infrastructure for successful completion of research work.

The Department of Microbiology (DMB) was established in 2017 to inculcate research-oriented learning aptitude and disseminate relevant scientific knowledge among the student community. The department’s priority is to maintain world-class research training standards for the students to generate next-generation young scientists and to facilitate their placement in International and National research organizations, reputed teaching institutions and competitive biological industrial entities. The department offers a regular M. Sc. Microbiology postgraduation program and Ph. D program to the aspirants of higher education in science. The department provides the students with a stable platform, motivation and continuous encouragement for professional advancement and personal development. The courses offered by the department encompass various areas of modern microbiology, such as General Microbiology, Cellular and Molecular Microbiology, Microbial biochemistry, Immunobiology, Microbial genetics, Microbial physiology, Bacteriology, Mycology, Virology, Parasitology, Food, Dairy, Pharmaceutical and Industrial microbiology, Agricultural ‘microbiology, Plant pathology, Methods in gene technology, medical microbiology and Microbial technology. These chosen study areas occupy the most advanced microbiological research fields and are capacitating students to evolve as highly skilled academicians. The department has established prowess in the domains of Microbial biochemistry, Biofuel production, downstream processing, Biomass conversion, Yeast genetics, Mycology, Medical microbiology, Inflammation, SR stress, Diagnostic biosensors, Phage display, Nanoparticles, Microbial genetics, Genome editing, Algal biotechnology, Carbon sequestration studies and Transcriptional engineering. The department has a dedicated teaching laboratory, central instrumentation and research facility and functional research laboratories. Over time, DMB has emerged as an efficient educator endowed with comprehensive research infrastructure and quality research plans for innovative scientific studies. We are a result-oriented, vibrant CUTN department, well depicted by the faculty research progress and student achievements.

The vision of the Department is to disseminate knowledge across the theoretical and practical aspects of applied microbiology that is imperative for the development of scientific research in the country. The mission of the Department of Microbiology is to impart knowledge and training across the different fields of microbiology to be able to equip students for academics/industry. The programs have been designed to enhance awareness of current research across various fields of microbiology and to bring student’s knowledge to the latest state-of-the-art in their area of interest. The department has all the facilities needed to conduct basic research across the diverse areas of specialization of its faculty members.
