Biographic Sketch: Dr Guru Balamurugan is an Professor and HOD in the Department of Geology, School of Earth Sciences, CUTN, Thiruvarur, Tamil Nadu. Previously, working as Associate Professor and Chairperson at the Centre for Geoinformatics, Jamsetji Tata School of Disaster Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. He has completed an MTech in Remote Sensing and GIS from Bharathidasan University and a PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB). He was awarded AICTE-NDF, Government of India in 2004 and DAAD Fellowship, Government of Germany in 2006-07 for his PhD degree on ‘Groundwater Resource Mapping and Modelling’ from IIT Bombay. He also obtained the ‘Surface Water Resources’ certificate course from ITC, The Netherlands in 2016. He has published 3 books, 50+ research articles in peer-reviewed journals and 20+ conference papers. Furthermore, he has also carried out several projects worth Rs. 12.2 million as PI and Co-PI supported by national and international agencies. Under his guidance, 5 scholars were awarded their PhD degrees, 6 were awarded MPhil degrees, and currently, 3 scholars are doing their doctoral research and guiding more than 70 Master's Degree students in their research. He has organized workshops, seminars, training, conferences and outreach programs on Disaster Management, Climate Change, and Geospatial Technology. Dr Balamurugan Guru is actively involved in various State Governments for developing a disaster management plan, disaster response, NRLM, disaster risk reduction, and resilience aspects. His current research interests are Geospatial Technology in hydrogeology, sustainable development and climate change in water resources, geological mapping, natural hazards mapping, risk analysis, disaster management, and environment and social impact assessments.
