Biographic Sketch:
Dr.Akila is currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Education and Sports which encompasses teacher education and research programs on regular basis at CUTN located at Thiruvarur-the granary of south India. Prior to this appointment she served at the Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. She was born in Coimbatore- the Manchester of South India in a family bound to Tamil tradition. She graduated B.Sc Physical Education from Avinashilingam University, B.P.Ed from Madras University and pursued M.P.Ed at Bharathiar University securing a gold medal for her academic excellence. Her PhD research work was into adapting yoga and physical education for the disabled. She developed interdisciplinary knowledge by acquiring degrees such as B.Ed in Mental retardation, M.Sc Yoga, M.Sc in Psychology, PG diploma in fitness management, child development and Special Olympics. Out of her deep interest in transforming life of special needs, she specialised in yoga for special needs from a US based Brazilian special yoga trainer. She was an elite athlete, a national level race walker who had set records in state, district and intercollegiate levels and a state basketball player. Her literary services were her passion not only by interest but also by genetic inheritance as proof she has trilingual publications. Her vision for the field is to raise standards of physical education and enhance the health status of the country. With a bag full of awards for academic, research and sports, having in mind the legacy she wanted to leave for life, she also serves the society as a social activist, a Rotarian empowering women, transgender, special needs community and the educationally backward through sports towards nation building.

   
Research Highlights :

Akila is specialised in adapted physical education and yoga for the special needs and transgender. She has deviced adapted yogic techniques for the intellectually challenged. She is the only physical educator of the state till date being awarded young scientist fellowships thrice by the Tamilnadu State Council for Science and technology. She has published 28 articles out of which 4 are Scopus indexed and 20 are UGC listed. She holds the highest Web of Science editor record and publon excellent reviewer record in India in sports category. She serves as an editorial member in reputed scholarly journals. She has compiled and edited many books which are widely used as reference materials for physical education and research programs. She has completed 10 funded individual projects and holds 1 ongoing major research project with a total quantum of 40 Lakh INR and has expertise in tapping funding from RUSA, Khelo India, ministries and got funding even for her PG research. In-spite being a young researcher she has expanded horizons collaborating with scientist across the globe for collaborative publications. She was invited as a resource person in Malaysia and Philippines for delivering keynotes in conferences. She has guided 3 PhD scholars and 18 PG scholars.
