Previously, he served as Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies at SRM Institute of Science and Technology and held roles as a Guest Lecturer at the University of Madras and a Project Fellow for the UGC CPEPA Project. Dr. Surendran completed his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Madras, where his research focused on ecological modeling of the Pichavaram mangrove ecosystem for sustainable development. With over a decade of academic and research experience, he has expertise in teaching GIS, remote sensing, military geography, cartography, and other geospatial technologies. Dr. Surendran specializes in spatial big data, geospatial analytics, ecological resilience, environmental sustainability, and disaster management. His publications span significant topics, including land use assessment for sustainable development, business site suitability, watershed prioritization, urban planning, criminal mobility patterns, and UAV survey accuracy. Notable works include studies published in The Indian Geographical Journal, Indian Cartographer, Springer, Population Geography, and Applied Geomatics. Additionally, he led an ICSSR-funded project on waste management awareness related to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in Greater Chennai. Dr. Surendran has served as a resource person in several national and international seminars, contributing lectures on GIS applications in e-health, environmental studies, and urban resilience. He has also undergone specialized training in data science, coastal vulnerability, climate impacts, and geospatial modeling. A life member of the Indian Society of Geomatics, Indian Society of Remote Sensing, Indian Meteorological Society, and The Indian Geographical Society, Dr. Surendran’s current research interests are focused on photogrammetry, 3D visualization, spatial modeling and prediction, and GIS-based suitability analysis for sustainable urban and environmental planning.
